Webinar Recap
In a compelling and enlightening one-hour webinar hosted by the FGC Warri 2000 Empire Association, Nimota—an experienced trainer and founder of Ideal Training—delivered a heartfelt presentation on the topic “Why IT is for Everyone.” The session was not about coding or complex gadgets. Rather, it served as a wake-up call and encouragement to incorporate digital tools into everyday life, regardless of career path or age.
1. The Digital Age is Now
We are not easing into the digital age—we are already deep in it. From banking to parenting, education to healthcare, tech has become inseparable from how we live and work. Nimota emphasised that avoiding digital tools is no longer an option; it’s a disadvantage.
2. Tech Is for Everyone—Not Just the “Tech-Savvy”
Whether you’re a teacher, lawyer, entrepreneur, artisan, or stay-at-home parent, there’s a tech layer to your field. Tools like Google Calendar, Canva, WhatsApp Business, ChatGPT, Zoom, and cloud storage are available to make work easier and life more organised.
3. Common Tech Myths Debunked
Nimota tackled the most common misconceptions:
- “I’m not a tech person.” Everyone can learn—just like parenting or leading.
- “I’m too old to start.” You’re not too old, just early in your tech journey.
- “I’ve done fine without it.” Maybe, but the world has changed—and isn’t going back.
- “Tech is expensive or time-consuming to learn.” Many powerful tools (like ChatGPT and YouTube) are free and time-saving in the long run
4. The Cost of Avoiding Tech
By refusing to engage with tech:
- You lose time through outdated processes.
- You lose income through missed clients and inefficiency.
- You lose confidence and relevance, which can lead to being excluded from key conversations.
5. Tech as a Lifeline
Tech isn’t just about convenience—it’s a survival skill:
- It protects your business through automation.
- Reduces mental load with reminders and calendars.
- Expands your visibility and influence.
- Keeps you in industry conversations and helps model responsible digital habits to children.
6. Lifelong Learning Is Non-Negotiable
Digital tools evolve constantly. Nimota stressed the importance of staying curious and teachable. What worked five years ago may no longer be relevant. Employers and clients respect those who adapt—not just those who were once skilled.
Powerful Real-Life Example
Nimota shared the story of a teenage girl who taught herself German using ChatGPT in order to pass a German-language exam—highlighting how accessible and transformative tech tools have become.
Final Words
“Tech is no longer optional. Avoiding it won’t protect your job; it’ll only limit your potential,” Nimota said. She urged everyone in the alumni group to shift from a state of survival to one of intentional growth, recognising that staying digitally literate is crucial in today’s world—for ourselves, our careers, and the next generation.
Conclusion
The webinar was an inspiring and empowering reminder that no matter where we are in life, it’s never too late to engage with technology. As alumni celebrating 25 years since graduation, it’s time to leverage our experience while embracing the tools of the future.
Let’s stay relevant, connected, and competitive.
