She walked toward us, radiating brilliance. Her fair skin glowed under the early morning sun. Her hair, flawlessly straight, flowed down her shoulders, a testament to the effort put into its perfect form. High-heeled sandals graced her heels and clicked softly against the ground as she stepped into our space, exuding a warmth that was impossible to ignore. She greeted us with grace, leaving behind an impression of soothing comfort and unshakable confidence.
That was a few months ago…
Today, however, was different. From afar, her countenance revealed that all was not well. Her hair, now hidden beneath a weave, looked hastily done, almost unrecognizable. Her face was bare and red. Something about her fair skin betrayed the signs of sleepless nights and tears with dark circles etched beneath her weary eyes.
If any doubt remained about her struggles, the solemn expression of her son, walking behind her, erased it. Like his mother, he moved slowly, his usually brilliant smile absent. The same smile that once charmed those around him and had often helped him slip out of trouble, was nowhere to be found. The heaviness between mother and child was unmistakable in that silence.
It must have been one of those painful moments of a mother giving her all, yet receiving so little in return. She was exhausted, perhaps disappointed. And I understood. I understood the weight of pouring oneself out and feeling empty in return. I sensed she needed strength, and so, I did what I knew best; I offered a silent prayer for her. I sent light and strength along her path, knowing she would need them for the struggles she was enduring.
Many of us, like this woman, are experiencing battles that words cannot capture. Some of us force a smile through the weight of our challenges. And while we may be justified in responding to others with the same energy they bring whether positive or negative, perhaps we can choose something different. We can offer love, empathy, and the quiet understanding that speaks of grace.
Remember, if you have nothing kind to say, say nothing at all.
Love, light, and strength to the hearts and souls struggling at this time.
With deep love and mindful thoughts,
